Your Mulberry Silk Questions Answered Simply
What is mulberry silk?
Mulberry silk is a luxurious and high-quality type of silk that comes from the cocoons of the Bombyx mori silkworm, which feeds exclusively on mulberry leaves.
What are the benefits of using mulberry silk products?
Mulberry silk is hypoallergenic, breathable, and naturally temperature regulating, which makes it an ideal choice for bedding and clothing. It is also incredibly soft and gentle on the skin and hair, helping to prevent wrinkles and minimize frizz.
What is the difference between 19 Momme and 22 Momme silk?
The main difference between 19 Momme and 22 Momme silk lies in their weight and density. 19 Momme silk is lighter and has a more delicate feel, while 22 Momme silk is heavier and has a denser texture. Both are excellent choices, but they offer slightly different characteristics.
Which one is more durable, 19 Momme or 22 Momme silk?
In terms of durability, 22 Momme silk tends to be more resilient due to its higher density. It can withstand more wear and tear over time compared to 19 Momme silk. However, with proper care, both types can last a long time.
Do both 19 Momme and 22 Momme silk provide the same benefits for hair and skin?
Yes, both 19 Momme and 22 Momme silk offer similar benefits for hair and skin care. They are gentle on the hair, reducing friction and preventing frizz and breakage. Additionally, silk's smooth surface is known to be beneficial for the skin, helping to minimize wrinkles and maintain moisture.
Are there any notable differences in the appearance of 19 Momme and 22 Momme silk?
Visually, the difference between 19 Momme and 22 Momme silk may not be easily noticeable. Both types exhibit the lustrous and elegant sheen characteristic of high-quality silk. However, 22 Momme silk might have a slightly richer appearance due to its denser weave.
How is mulberry silk different from other types of silk?
Mulberry silk is generally considered to be the highest quality and most luxurious type of silk, due to its long, smooth fibers and uniform texture. Other types of silk, such as wild silk or tussah silk, tend to have shorter fibers and a more irregular texture.
What is Momme in silk fabric?
Momme is a traditional unit of measurement used to determine the quality of silk fabrics. It represents the weight of silk in pounds per 100 yards of material. One Momme is equivalent to 4.340 grams per square meter, with 8 Momme being roughly equal to 1 ounce per square yard or 35 grams per square meter.
The usual range of momme weight for different weaves of silk are:
Gauze—3 to 5 mm , Organza-4 to 6 mm, Habotai—12 to 16 mm , Crepe de Chine-12 to 16 mm , Charmeuse-12 to 30 mm, Chiffon-6 to 8 mm (can be made in double thickness, i.e. 12 to 16 mm) , Raw silk-35 to 40 mm (heavier silk appear more "wooly")
The higher the momme weight, the better?
Momme(mm) = Density
19mm = 19lbs 100 yards of silk
The higher the Momme weight, the more luxurious the fabric and the longer the shelf-life.
However, the appropriate Momme weight for a silk product depends on its intended use. For instance, a 25 mm silk pillowcase is more durable than a 19 mm silk pillowcase, but it may be too heavy for sleepwear. The best Momme weight for silk bedding is between 19 and 25 mm, with 19 mm being the entry-level, 22 mm being intermediate, and 25 mm being luxury. Thread count is also a factor to consider when purchasing silk products. While it is not as important for silk as it is for cotton, a higher thread count generally indicates better quality for silk with the same Momme weight.
What is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100?
The OEKO-TEX® standards 100 is developed and managed by the International OEKO-TEX® Association, a group of 16 textile research and test institutes in Europe and Japan, with representative agencies and contact offices in over 60 countries worldwide.
Products that pass the test in this system are allowed to carry a certification label that guarantees to the consumers that the product does not contain harmful substances at levels that can be dangerous to the human body.
Most of SilkSouq's products own the OEKO certification and are safe and healthy for your skin.
How do I care for my mulberry silk products?
Mulberry silk is a delicate fabric that should be hand washed or machine washed on a gentle cycle using a mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners, as these can damage the silk fibers. Hang or lay flat to dry, and avoid exposing your silk products to direct sunlight or heat.
How to Get Wrinkles Out of Silk?
Silk is a delicate fabric that requires special care when it comes to removing wrinkles. Here are some steps you can take to get wrinkles out of silk:
- Use a steamer: The best way to remove wrinkles from silk is to use a handheld steamer. Hold the steamer about 6 inches away from the fabric and gently steam the area until the wrinkles disappear. Be sure to keep the steamer moving to avoid damaging the silk.
- Hang it up: Another way to remove wrinkles from silk is to hang the garment in a steamy bathroom. Turn on the shower to the hottest temperature and let the bathroom fill with steam. Then hang the silk garment on a hanger and close the door. Leave the garment hanging for about 10-15 minutes, then remove it and gently smooth out any remaining wrinkles.
- Iron carefully: If you don't have a steamer, you can also use an iron to remove wrinkles from silk. However, be sure to use a low heat setting and place a thin cloth or pressing cloth over the silk to protect it from direct heat. Gently press the iron over the cloth to smooth out any wrinkles.
- Avoid using water: Do not try to remove wrinkles from silk by using water, as this can cause water spots and damage the fabric.
- Store properly: To prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place, store silk garments properly. Hang them up or fold them carefully, and avoid crushing or stuffing them in a drawer or suitcase.
How To Hand Wash Silk At Home?
Silk is a delicate fabric that requires special care when washing to avoid damage or shrinking. Here are some steps you can take to hand wash silk at home:
- Fill a clean sink or basin with cool water: Silk should be washed in cool water to prevent damage to the fabric.
- Add a gentle detergent: Choose a mild, pH-neutral detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics. Be sure to read the label to ensure that it is safe for silk.
- Submerge the silk: Gently place the silk garment into the water, being careful not to agitate it too much.
- Let it soak: Allow the silk to soak in the water for a few minutes, making sure that it is completely submerged.
- Swirl gently: Gently swirl the silk around in the water to help remove any dirt or grime. Be sure to avoid scrubbing or rubbing the fabric, which can cause damage.
- Rinse thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and refill the sink or basin with cool, clean water. Rinse the silk thoroughly until all of the soap has been removed.
- Remove excess water: Gently press the silk against the side of the sink or basin to remove excess water. Do not wring or twist the fabric, as this can cause damage.
- Dry flat: Lay the silk flat on a clean towel and roll it up to remove any remaining water. Then, lay the silk flat on a clean, dry towel to air dry. Avoid exposing the silk to direct sunlight or heat, as this can damage the fabric.
- Iron carefully: If necessary, iron the silk on a low heat setting while it is still slightly damp. Be sure to use a pressing cloth to protect the fabric and avoid direct heat.
Why there is a color difference?
We make every effort to display our product colors accurately on our website. However, it's important to keep in mind that colors can vary depending on the settings of your monitor, so we can't guarantee that the colors on your screen will perfectly match the actual product.
In addition, silk is a unique and lustrous fabric with a triangular prism-like structure that refracts light in various directions, resulting in different hues and shades. This characteristic can cause the color of the actual product you receive to appear different under different lighting conditions than what you see on your monitor or in our product images.
